PSL latest appointment to move straight to the bench

Marumo Gallants’ newly appointed head coach Ronnie ‘Magnet’ Kanalelo will be walking straight to the bench on Sunday for the match against Orlando Pirates.

Kanalelo has taken over from Phuti Mohafe just after guiding Namibian champions African Stars into the second qualifying round of the CAF Champions League.

Stars will meet Pirates in that round to determine who then proceeds to the group stage.

Bucs are the first opponents for Kanalelo in his new job in a league match to be played at Royal Bafokeng on Sunday afternoon.

Kanalelo – who is Namibian – will have the advantage of not needing to apply for a work permit as he holds South African permanent residence.

Namibians born before the country’s independence on March 21, 1990 were eligible for South African permanent residency.

For those like Kanalelo and several others, this allows them to work as non-foreigners in South Africa but remain holding their Namibian citizenship.

Beyond that, Kanalelo was a goalkeeper at Mamelodi Sundowns from the 1997/98 season through to the end of the 2004/05 campaign before holding goalkeeper coaching jobs at Bloemfontein Celtic and Maritzburg United.

He won three league titles, the BOB Save Super Bowl, and the Rothmans Cup.

Throughout that time, he competed with John Tlale, Collen Makhanya, Paul Evans, Simon Gopane, Wendell Robinson, Andre Arendse, and Brian Baloyi.

This website knows Kanalelo as a coach with a firm fist in the dressing room and so will have high demands for his players at Marumo.

It has emerged that the 55-year-old is in favour of bringing some technical team members of his preference with Rudi Louw as fitness and conditioning coach.

The pair of Robert Nauseb and Willem Mwedihanga are in the frame as assistants, though they are currently to attached to UNAM FC, who just got knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup.
