Return lights flashing for Pirates' Bafana duo

Orlando Pirates have provided a vital update on the return to action of Bafana Bafana internationals Thalente Mbatha and Evidence Makgopa.

Both players have been sidelined since the opening stages of the 2026/27 domestic campaign.

Mbatha has been out of action since 10 August due to a severe knee injury, while Makgopa has been receiving specialised treatment for patellar tendinitis since 5 August.

The persistent physical setbacks unfortunately forced the highly-rated duo to miss out on recent international action during South Africa's continental qualification fixtures.

Rehabilitation complete: Pirates confirm full training return

In the latest update issued by the Buccaneers' website, the recovery process has advanced significantly as both stars edge closer to a competitive return. The club confirmed that Mbatha and Makgopa have officially returned to full-team training following successful rehabilitation programs.

Furthermore, the pair have already featured in behind-closed-doors friendly matches during the international break as they work toward regaining match sharpness and aerobic capacity.

With the medical team giving the final green light, head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou will be pleased to welcome back two of his key tactical components.

The return of the influential duo provides a monumental boost for the Soweto giants' squad depth and selection options.

Pirates are now racing against time to build the players' peak match fitness ahead of their highly anticipated appearance in the MTN8 final, understood to be earmarked for 10 October.
