Zungu handed huge responsibility at new club

Zungu joined Indian side Malappuram FC in August 2026, arriving with considerable experience from his career in South Africa and Europe.

His move came after his spell with AmaZulu, with the midfielder now looking to make his mark in India's Super League Kerala.
Zungu handed captaincy
The former Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana star was named captain as Malappuram began their campaign on Sunday, putting the responsibility of leading the team on his shoulders from the outset.
It was a demanding introduction for Zungu, however, as Malappuram were beaten 1-0 by Forca Kochi FC in their opening fixture.
Tough start for the veteran
The result means Zungu's first match wearing the captain’s armband ended in defeat, but the midfielder will have the opportunity to use his experience to help the team respond in their next outing.

Having played at the highest level in both domestic and international football, Zungu's leadership could be an important part of Malappuram’s campaign as they look to make their mark in the competition.
For the 33-year-old, the challenge now is to turn his experience into results and lead Malappuram’s response after their difficult start.
