Damian Willemse
2025 Test Caps: 10 (8 starts, 2 as replacement)
Damian Willemse’s value to the Springboks in 2025 lay not in one position, one moment or one highlight-reel play, but in his ability to quietly hold the entire backline together. In a squad built on adaptability, Willemse has become the ultimate plug-and-play solution, equally comfortable at flyhalf, inside centre or fullback, and trusted implicitly by the Springbok coaching staff to make the right decisions under pressure.
While others attracted headlines for eye-catching attacking returns, Willemse went about his work with a composure that belied his age and underscored his experience as a double Rugby World Cup winner. Already a veteran of the 2019 and 2023 triumphs, he has evolved from precocious talent into a senior figure who understands Test match tempo, game management and the value of territorial control.

His finest performance of the 2025 season came in Wellington, where South Africa produced a statement win over the All Blacks. Willemse was instrumental in neutralising New Zealand’s counter-attack while repeatedly turning defensive moments into attacking platforms. His tactical kicking pinned the All Blacks deep, his decision-making under the high ball was flawless, and his calm distribution allowed the Springboks to dictate terms.
‘A lot of heart’
What makes Willemse such a vital yet often underappreciated figure is that his influence is rarely confined to the stat sheet. He brings structural balance to the backline, enabling the Springboks to change shape seamlessly within matches, and offering coaches the freedom to select specialist finishers on the bench without sacrificing coverage.
"Representing South Africa on the rugby field is one of the proudest achievements of my life," Willemse tells KickOff, reflecting on his journey from the fields in Strand to the Green and Gold.
"Every time I run out for the Springboks, I experience a deep sense of honour and responsibility. It’s not just about playing the game I love, it’s about standing for something bigger than myself, for a country with a rich history and a lot of heart."
