Cardoso sitting on another cruise at Sundowns

The first of three games that will take Miguel Cardoso to 100 games in charge at Mamelodi Sundowns will come with a notable success factor for the Portuguese coach.

Cardoso will be on the bench for the 98th game since he took over at Sundowns when Siwelele arrive at Loftus Versfeld (19h30).

That will be a game played with Cardoso having never lost at home in the league since he took over on December 10, 2024.

That’s been 27 matches in the Betway Premiership at home during which Sundowns have won 24 and drawn three.

This equals to 75 points collected at home out of 81.

Only Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch, and Orlando Pirates have travelled to the capital city and shared points with the 15-time PSL champions proving just how difficult the trip to Tshwane has now become.

Strangely, his first league match at home came 10 games into his tenure – an emphatic 4-0 win over Golden Arrows on February 2, 2025.

Sundowns last lost at home in the league against Cape Town City in May 2024 while Rulani Mokwena was still in charge.

This was a dead rubber last match of the season as they had already wrapped the league title.

That then became their only defeat of the season, spoiling their attempt to go all season without defeat.

Since then, they have played another 33 matches at home without surrendering all three points to the opposition.

Their previous defeat at home had been against TS Galaxy on August 10, 2022, as Sead Ramovic recorded a famous victor against Sundowns.

This then means Sundowns are now sitting on one defeat in 61 league games at home.

Cardoso has only lost four in the league – all away games – since taking over.

The 54-year-old will reach two years reporting for duty at Chloorkop in December, which is the longest that he has been in one job as head coach.  

He didn’t complete a full year in each of his five previous jobs at Esperance, second stint at Rio Ave, AEK Athens, Celta Vigo, and Nantes.
