Mendoza set to serve as No. 2 quarterback for Raiders, starting tight end out

The Raiders will be without star tight end Brock Bowers when they host the Dolphins in Sunday’s season-opening game at Allegiant Stadium, as expected.

Bowers leads the list of inactives, released by the team 90 minutes before the scheduled 1:25 p.m. kickoff.

Aidan O’Connell will serve as the emergency quarterback, which means rookie top pick Fernando Mendoza would enter the game should anything happen to veteran starter Kirk Cousins.

Coach Klint Kubiak revealed earlier this week Mendoza will need to be prepared for whenever his number gets called, even if it is to enter a game after taking very few reps during the practice week.

“That’s the life of an NFL backup,” Kubiak said. “That’s why he’s got to be the most mature guy in the room. A guy that can prepare on his own in the darkness and the shadows, and then when called upon, go win the game.”

Cornerback Darrell Luter Jr., safety Dalton Johnson, linebacker Cody Lindenberg and guard Bryce Cabeldue round out the list of inactives.

Cabeldue was claimed off waivers this week from the Seahawks, where he played for Kubiak and offensive line coach Rick Dennison.

He has had very little practice time with the Raiders, but could provide key depth on the line as the season continues.

“Very excited to add Bryce,” Kubiak said. “He’s a talented young player, familiar with the player. He fits our scheme, and it’s up to him to keep improving.”

The Raiders activated tight end Chris Myarick and wide receiver Cody White from the practice squad for Sunday’s game.
