Knights advance
Two goals from Mitch Marner and 22 saves by Carter Hart help the Golden Knights to a 5-1 victory over the Utah Mammoth in Game 6.
The Knights win the series 4-2 and will face the Anaheim Ducks in the second round.
Empty-net goal adds to Knights lead
Cole Smith fired from a step inside his own blue line and hit the middle of the empty net with 3:35 remaining.
It’s a three-goal third period so far, and a 5-1 Golden Knights lead. That will do it.
Marner adds 2nd goal
What a game for Mitch Marner. Shea Theodore’s shot is deflected onto Marner’s blade and he rips it home from the slot for his second goal of the game and third point.
The Knights lead 4-1 with less than 8 minutes remaining and appear on their way to the second round.
Knights regain 2-goal lead
Colton Sissons finds room in the low slot and he pounces on a rebound after Brayden McNabb’s shot was stopped by Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka.
That’s a huge goal and it comes 1:59 after Yamamoto converted for Utah.
The Knights lead 3-1.
Mammoth cut lead in half
Kailer Yamamoto takes the long breakout pass from Mikhail Sergachev and his wrist shot slips through Carter Hart.
The Mammoth cut the Knights’ lead to 2-1 at 7:41 of the third period.
It’s the first goal of the series for Yamamoto and the Delta Center is hopping now.
Knights showing their maturity
This has been a clinic so far by the Golden Knights on how to close out a game on the road. They’re limiting Utah’s chances and wearing down the Mammoth.
Utah is starting to get frustrated, too, and the Knights aren’t taking the bait.
It’s 2-0 with 16 minutes left in the third period and the crowd at Delta Center is starting to get antsy.
End of 2nd period
That wasn’t the best 20 minutes for the Golden Knights, but they withstood the push from the Mammoth and leaned on goaltender Carter Hart.
Vegas was able to elevate its game late in the period and doubled its lead on Mitch Marner’s goal.
It’s 2-0, and the Knights are 20 minutes away from the second round and a date with the Anaheim Ducks.
Knights extend lead
What a shift from the Golden Knights. They pinned the Mammoth in their own zone for more than 2 minutes before Mitch Marner blasts a shot home from the right faceoff circle with 44.1 seconds remaining.
The Knights lead 2-0 on Marner’s first goal of the series.
Mammoth making push, Hart stands tall
The Knights continue to turn over the puck, and Carter Hart is coming to the rescue.
He turned away Kevin Stenlund to keep Vegas up 1-0 with 12:23 left in the second period.
Knights to full strength
The Golden Knights’ penalty-killing units continue to shine this series. Mark Stone is out of the box and the Knights are 2-for-2 so far.
They continue to lead 1-0 with seven minutes gone in the second period.
Stone to the box
Not much argument from Knights captain Mark Stone as he goes for tripping and the Knights are on the penalty kill for the second time with 15:59 remaining in the second period.
It’s 1-0 Knights.
2nd period begins
The Golden Knights and Mammoth are back on the ice for the second period.
Vegas has a power play for 1:58 and leads Utah 1-0.
Golden Knights lead after 1st period
Thanks to Brett Howden’s goal, the Knights own a 1-0 lead after the first period in Salt Lake City. Goaltender Carter Hart has six saves for the Knights.
Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka made nine stops.
Knights get a PP
Alex Kerfoot swipes out the legs from under Knights goaltender Carter Hart and gets a goalie interference penalty with 2 seconds left in the first period. That time will carry over into the second period and the Knights will have fresh ice to use when play resumes.
Also of note, defenseman Jeremy Lauzon took a puck to the face after Pavel Dorofeyev’s shot from the slot was deflected. Something to keep an eye on.
Knights take lead
Brett Howden is carrying a hot stick. He bangs home the rebound after Mitch Marner’s shot went wide and bounced off the end boards.
The Knights lead 1-0 with 4:58 left in the first period.
It’s the fourth goal in the past three games for Howden, who won Game 5 with a double-overtime tally.
Odd-man rush missed
The Knights created another good opportunity with Ivan Barbashev and Mark Stone on a 2-on-1 with under 8 minutes in the first period. Barbashev’s pass to Stone made it through, but the captain made one pass too many trying to hit Shea Theodore as the trailer and the chance was squandered.
Moments later, Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka swallowed a shot close range by Brayden McNabb.
Good start for the road team
The Knights can’t complain about their start so far, even with the penalty to Ivan Barbashev that needed to be killed off. It’s been similar to the past couple of games with the Knights owning a slight majority of the puck possession and leading on the shot counter.
Still 0-0 with 9 minutes left in the first period.
Knights kill off penalty
Ivan Barbashev is sent to the penalty box for hooking against Utah forward Nick Schmaltz. But the Knights penalty kill continues to stifle Utah and Vegas is back to full strength.
That’s a big early kill for the Knights. There’s 13:05 remaining in the first period and we’re goalless.
Knights with early chance
After Carter Hart made a pad save at one end, the Knights had a grade-A look at the other end. Brett Howden found Mitch Marner with room in the offensive zone, but he couldn’t beat Mammoth goaltender Karel Vejmelka.
Marner remains without a goal in the series.

Karlsson nears return
Center William Karlsson returned to the ice for the first time in almost six months the morning of the Knights’ potential close-out Game 6 against the Utah Mammoth at Delta Center.
The 33-year-old Original Misfit did not take part in line rushes, indicating he will not play, but a sign that he’s inching closer to a return.
Dorofeyev delivers
Pavel Dorofeyev went from benched in Game 4 to a hero with a hat trick in the Golden Knights’ 5-4 double overtime win over the Utah Mammoth in Game 5 on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old has four goals in the last two games and been instrumental to the Knights being one win away from advancing to the second round.
Howden comes through in clutch
Brett Howden has three goals the last two games — two of them short-handed, the other the tying goal with 10 minutes left in regulation of Game 4 that the Knights went on to win in overtime.
He has single-handedly turned the tide in a special teams battle that was leaning in the Mammoth’s favor the first three games. Howden has scored more short-handed (two) than Utah has power play goals (one).
