Fever’s Sophie Cunningham on TikTok pokes at A’ja Wilson incident in Aces’ loss

Indiana Fever wing Sophie Cunningham alluded Wednesday morning on TikTok to Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson’s confrontation with a spectator during Game 2 of their first-round playoff matchup.

In a video titled “according to the rulebook …..” Cunningham said, “Not trying to be dramatic at all. I was here having my morning coffee, and what a damn comeback year for the point. Who would have ever thought?”

Wilson said she confronted a spectator seated behind the baseline Tuesday during a 99-89 loss at Gainbridge Fieldhouse because he was “taking steps toward me, pointing at me.” Cunningham was whistled for a defensive foul as Wilson fought for positioning, triggering the stoppage in play during which she left the playing surface.

Aces teammates rallied around Wilson as the spectator was escorted from his seat, returning to it a few minutes later. The Fever said in a statement security investigated the spectator’s conduct, determining he didn’t violate the “Fan Code of Conduct.”

Cunningham went viral this year for pointing at DeWanna Bonner, then of the Phoenix Mercury, for an extended period during a June 22 matchup. The caption to her TikTok is likely alluding to the WNBA’s Rule 12A, Section V, which says subjects who purposefully enter the stands during play warrant an automatic ejection. Wilson was assessed a technical foul.

The deciding game of the best-of-three series is Thursday at Michelob Ultra Arena.

“You don’t know me at all to come and step toward me and point at me and say anything out your mouth to me,” said Wilson, the four-time WNBA MVP. “I apologize to my team for that. You don’t have to like me. You don’t have to love me. You can hate me with all your heart. But you don’t know me. But I guarantee you will respect me.”
