Prairie View knocks off rival Grambling to maintain run of State Fair Classic success

Prairie View has now won eight of the last nine State Fair Classics over Grambling.

Tremaine Jackson still doesn’t know if his team is good enough to win a championship, but it was good enough to get the job done Saturday night.

Prairie View A&M (2-3, 2-0) beat rival Grambling State 21-14 in the State Fair Classic to snap a two-game skid and improve the team to 2-0 in SWAC play.

After losses to Baylor and Stephen F. Austin, Jackson didn’t shy away from where his team sat at 1-3 heading into the Cotton Bowl on Saturday, saying earlier in the week that the record showed exactly where they stood. Granted, even after beating their rival, he still wasn’t ready to give a concrete evaluation of the reigning SWAC champions, other than to say that they were good enough to win that game.

“We were starved for a win,” Jackson said. “We needed a win worse than some crops need rain in the Midwest.

“We still got a lot to work on, but it's better to work on it while winning instead of having to learn that lesson in a loss.”
