Tekken Creator Says Elden Ring Director Hidetaka Miyazaki Still Underestimates Himself

by · OnMSFT

Hidetaka Miyazaki has become one of the most respected names in modern game development, but the Elden Ring director still appears to see himself very differently. Despite leading FromSoftware through the success of Dark Souls, Bloodborne, Sekiro, and Elden Ring, Miyazaki reportedly believes his understanding of games is shallow compared to other industry veterans.

Tekken series creator Katsuhiro Harada recently shared this view while speaking about Miyazaki’s unusual career and serious creative mindset. Harada noted that Miyazaki entered the game industry later than most major Japanese creators, as he did not begin working in games until he was almost thirty years old.

According to Harada, that late start shaped Miyazaki in a different way. He did not come from the same background as developers who entered the industry during the rise of 3D polygon graphics, yet he still helped create a style of action RPG that influenced an entire generation of games.

Harada recalls Miyazaki’s serious creative side

Harada also remembered a moment from the development of Summer Lesson for VR, when Miyazaki visited to try an early build along with people from other game companies. While others treated the demo casually, Miyazaki played it with deep focus and then sat silently while thinking about what kind of game he would make with the same idea.

That reaction stayed with Harada because it showed Miyazaki’s obsessive approach to creativity. He was not only testing a game, he was studying its possibilities and mentally rebuilding it from his own point of view.

Miyazaki still avoids public game discussions

Harada also said Miyazaki dislikes video interviews and live streams because he feels many people in the industry understand games better than he does. That view sounds surprising when it comes from the director behind Elden Ring, but it also explains why fans see him as both humble and deeply focused on his craft.

For many players, Miyazaki’s work already speaks clearly. His games continue to challenge players, shape design trends, and show why FromSoftware remains one of the most closely watched studios in the industry.
