Eagles’ Hurts to miss game against Panthers with blood clot

by · The Washington Times

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to a superficial blood clot in his calf, the team announced Thursday.

The kind of blood clot Hurts has often form in a vein close to the surface of the skin but can be painful and need treatment.

The Eagles did not provide a timeline for his return.

Hurts first reported a problem with his calf following a practice on Oct. 8 after he took a cleat to the area during a loss to the Los Angeles Rams on Oct. 4.

““It was a very unique experience, to say the least,” Hurts told reporters on Wednesday. “I don’t want to get into the details of kind of leading up to the game and whatnot. But got nicked up in the Rams game.”

Hurts practiced on Wednesday and Thursday last week and informed the medical staff of the injury following the Oct. 8 practice.

It didn’t keep him from traveling with the team to London for Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

“Out of an abundance of caution, an ultrasound was performed on Saturday following the team’s flight to London and walkthrough,” the Eagles said in a statement. “The ultrasound revealed a superficial blood clot. Our medical staff and doctors in London reviewed the results and concluded that activity and mobility were important and that Jalen could safely play. Doctors recommended a follow-up ultrasound within 72 hours of the game and the return flight to Philadelphia.”

Even so, team officials determined that he could safely play against Jacksonville.

Sunday’s game in Philadelphia between the 2-3 Eagles and 2-2 Panthers is off the table, though.

“On Wednesday night, a follow-up ultrasound revealed movement in the small blood clot,” Philadelphia’s officials said. “Jalen will be out for Sunday’s game vs. the Carolina Panthers as we determine the appropriate course for treatment. His health and safety are our highest priority.”

Fourth-year quarterback Tanner McKee, a Stanford product in his fourth NFL season, is expected to start in place of Hurts.
