Mystics GM Wideman leaves franchise after one season due to ‘strategic differences’
by Liam Griffin · The Washington TimesWashington Mystics general manager Jamila Wideman left the franchise on Monday, just as the team prepared for the ongoing free agency period and next week’s WNBA draft.
The Mystics said in a statement that the organization agreed to “part ways” with Wideman due to “strategic differences.”
“We are thankful for the time and work she devoted to the team,” said Michael Winger, the basketball president for Monumental Sports, which owns the Mystics. “At this time, we are looking forward to this historic new season for the WNBA and remain focused on building sustainable success in Washington. I have every confidence in the team we have, and will continue to build, to move us toward our goals.”
Coach Sydney Johnson will take over Wideman’s duties.
The WNBA announced Sunday that the league would have an abbreviated free agency period after extended delays due to a labor dispute. Monday and Tuesday allowed franchises to extend qualifying offers to restricted free agents. Teams can negotiate with free agents on Wednesday, though deals cannot be signed until Saturday.
The WNBA draft is scheduled for Monday next week. The Mystics hold three of the first 11 selections after finishing with a 16-28 record last year. Training camp begins on April 19 before Washington’s regular-season opener against the Toronto Tempo on May 8.
