The King celebrates an extraordinary day as three royal horses storm to victory in famous hat-trick

The King and Queen enjoyed a sensational day on the racecourse on Friday after three of their horses stormed to victory across two different venues.

The royal couple celebrated a memorable treble with wins at both York Racecourse and Newbury Racecourse, continuing the Royal Family’s long-standing success in horse racing.

Portcullis got the afternoon off to the perfect start at York with an impressive display in the Darley EBF “Confined” Novice Stakes.

The colt, sired by superstar stallion Frankel, had already attracted attention following an eye-catching debut success at Newmarket and again showed his class under jockey William Buick.

Sent off as the even-money favourite, Portcullis justified strong support despite the race changing complexion when rival Weheedd was pulled up early in the contest.

The success was followed by another York victory for the royal colours as Warrant Holder powered home in the Support Macmillan Charity Raceday Handicap.

The four-year-old travelled strongly before taking control late on to beat Thunder Run by a length, handing the King and Queen a second winner on the Knavesmire.

Further success followed at Newbury where Point Of Law completed a memorable hat-trick for the royal owners.

The promising runner improved on a recent second-place finish at Yarmouth to land the Coolmore City Of Troy EBF Maiden Stakes as the heavily-backed 4-7 favourite.

All three winners were trained by celebrated father-and-son partnership John Gosden and Thady Gosden, capping a hugely successful afternoon for the Gosden yard.

The victories continue an encouraging spell for the King and Queen’s racing operation, with Royal Ascot on the horizon.

Their Majesties are expected to attend the five day race meeting in June, as they do every year with members of their family.
