Washington men losing Courtland Muldrew to transfer portal, report says

A week before the NCAA Division I transfer portal opens for men’s basketball, freshman guard Courtland Muldrew reportedly said he plans to leave the Washington Huskies after one season.

He’s the first UW player to exit the team following a 16-17 season and 12th place finish in the Big Ten.

On his X account, Muldrew reposted the announcement Tuesday morning after Sam Kayser at League Ready broke the news.

Muldrew, a 6-foot-3 guard from Arlington, Texas, played at Har-Ber High in Springdale, Ark., where he was a consensus four-star prospect who was the first among UW’s 2025 recruits to commit on Oct. 8, 2024.

After playing sparingly off the bench early in the season, a rash of injuries allowed Muldrew to appear in the final eight games, including a start while averaging 6.3 points and 3.8 rebounds.

During the season, he averaged 3.3 points, 1.9 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 12.7 minutes in 20 games, including 19 as a reserve.

“Honestly, I should have played him more a lot earlier,” UW coach Danny Sprinkle said on March 4 after Muldrew scored a career-high tying nine points and was instrumental at the end of a 91-72 win against USC. “He’s been terrific. Just fearless when he’s in there and we need that. We need his athleticism and the way he just plays hard.

“I’m excited about him and how his game is going to develop.”

Before signing with Washington, Muldrew had scholarship offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Creighton.

Washington is expected to lose seniors Quimari Peterson, Jacob Ognacevic, Desmond Claude and Christian Nitu, who left the team before the season.

Currently, there are 10 scholarship players on the roster including Hannes Steinbach, Zoom Diallo, Wesley Yates III, Franck Kepnang, JJ Mandaquit, Lathan Sommerville, Bryson Tucker, Jasir Rencher, Nikola Dzepina and Mady Traore.

The transfer portal opens April 7 for a 15-day window that ends April 21.
