A Modder Is Turning Dino Crisis 2 Into a Full 3D Third-Person Game

Now here is something truly amazing. A modder is currently working on a project that will turn Dino Crisis 2 into a full 3D third-person game. And although this mod is in a very early development phase, we have its first WIP gameplay video.

For those who did not know, Dino Crisis 2 did not use full 3D worlds like the first game. Instead, it used pre-rendered backgrounds, much like the classic Resident Evil games. This had both good and bad sides.

The good thing about this approach was that Dino Crisis 2 looked better than the first game when it came out. The bad thing is that it makes the game much harder to turn into a third-person title. That’s why we already have a third-person mod for the first Dino Crisis, but not for the second game.

So, modder ‘RAW’ is currently working on a Dino Crisis 2 recomp with an over-the-shoulder camera, and he is rebuilding the locations in 3D.

As said, this project is in a very early development phase. Nevertheless, it appears to have a lot of potential. And, since this will be a PC recomp of the DC2 game, it will have support for the mouse and keyboard.

All in all, I’m really excited about this as it will allow us to experience Dino Crisis 2 in a completely different way.

Now, if you want to play the original Dino Crisis 2 on a modern PC in 2026, I highly recommend Dino Crisis 2 Classic Rebirth.

This mod replaces old tech with newer tools. This helps the game run better on modern PCs. It replaces DirectDraw 7 with Direct3D 9 for better GPU support. It also replaces DirectInput 7 with XInput, RawInput, and other tools.

The mod also adds XAudio2 for sound. It even has its own video player, so you don’t need to install extra codecs.

Classic Rebirth also fixes many issues from the original game. It brings back missing visual effects and fixes broken ones. It also fixes music and sound issues. The mod even fixes the frame rate. You can now play at 20, 30, or 60 FPS.

What’s more, Dino Crisis 2 Classic Rebirth should work with the preview build of the Dino Crisis 2 Rex-HD Project from 2023. Dino Crisis 2 Rex-HD Project overhauls the pre-rendered backgrounds. As such, it’s a must.
