Square Enix has removed Denuvo from Just Cause 3

Now here is a pleasant surprise. Square Enix has just removed the Denuvo anti-tamper tech from Just Cause 3. Just Cause 3 came out in December 2015, which means that it took an entire decade for SE to remove it. But hey, better late than never, I guess.

What’s funny here is that earlier this month, I informed you about Just Cause 3 Unlimited Edition. Just Cause 3 Unlimited Edition brings over 200 tweaks and changes. For instance, there are major changes to Rico’s movement. It also adds 60 new vehicles and 25 new weapons. This is the definitive way to play Just Cause 3 in 2025.

Square Enix has removed Denuvo from a lot of its older titles. For instance, the publisher has removed it from games like The Diofield ChronicleVALKYRIE ELYSIUMTRIANGLE STRATEGYLIVE A LIVE, and Forspoken. Moreover, both Octopath Traveler and its sequel no longer use it. And, in May 2024, SE removed it from Star Ocean The Second Story R. Finally, in March 2025, the publisher removed it from Final Fantasy 16. Still, I don’t know why it took that long to remove it from Just Cause 3. And what about Just Cause 4, which still uses it?

As we’ve reported, other companies have also removed Denuvo from several of their games. In March 2023, KRAFTON removed Denuvo from The Callisto ProtocolNEOWIZ has also removed it from its Souls-like game, Lies of P. In October 2024, Gearbox removed it from Homeworld 3, too.

Then we have Capcom. Recently, Capcom removed Denuvo from Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny. That’s not the only game from Capcom that no longer has it. Monster Hunter RiseMonster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, and Resident Evil Village are Denuvo-free as we speak. Similarly, Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake no longer use it. In July 2025, the Japanese team also removed it from Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess.

And that’s not all. Bethesda’s Wolfenstein YoungbloodGhostwire: Tokyo, and Doom Eternal no longer have it. Warner Bros has also removed it from Mortal Kombat 11. Then we have Bandai Namco, which has removed it from Tekken 7 and NARUTO TO BORUTO: SHINOBI STRIKER.

All in all, this is a welcome surprise. From what I know, Square Enix does not have any plans for a new Just Cause game. And, to be honest, I was really let down by JC4. Just Cause 4 felt inferior to Just Cause 3. It also looked worse than it. It’s a bummer that we won’t get a new Just Cause game anytime soon. But hey, it is what it is.

Stay tuned for more!
