Duke Nukem 3D Path Tracing Mod Gets Full Voxel Support

by · DSOGaming

And the time has finally come. Modder ‘postmemetic’ has released a new update for his incredible Path Tracing Mod for Duke Nukem 3D that adds support for voxels. This is what I’ve been waiting for to dive in, and I’m glad the modder has added it.

Going into more details, Version 0.2 also remasters Episode 2. Not only that, but it brings a big performance overhaul pass to reduce CPU times on large levels with lots of geometry churn (E1L4, E2L8). According to the modder, frametimes have been reduced by up to 80% in some cases.

Version 0.2 also comes with a better install and launch experience. It has better Duke3d.grp discovery and a voxel download helper. Plus, it fixes a couple of bugs that were present in the previous version. For instance, it fixes a renderer bug that could cause visual jitter and egregious RELAX denoiser blurring. It also comes with a fix for rockets and enemies disappearing during flight, like in the big arena of map E2L8.

As I said, the main feature of this version, at least in my opinion, is the voxel support. This will give the game a more 3D-ish look. Furthermore, the voxels retain the art style of the original 2D sprites. These voxels are ideal for those who want to re-experience DN3D with Path Tracing. So, don’t sleep on them.

You can go ahead and download the mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a trailer for it. This trailer has the new voxels that replace all of the game’s 2D sprites. So, make sure to watch it as it can give you an idea of what you can expect from it.

If you want to play older games with Path Tracing, you should try these mods. For instance, you can find such mods for Black MesaStar Wars Republic CommandoNeed for Speed CarbonNFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find more for BioShockMorrowindNFS: Underground 2Star Wars Jedi Outcast, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.

And that’s not all. Modders have released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus ExMirror’s Edge, and Tomb Raider. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Gold have also gotten the path-traced treatment. Half-Life fans can also play the game with Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing. Then we have the beta release of the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for DoomDoom 2Quake, and Serious Sam. These last ones are among the best Path Tracing Mods you can find. So, don’t skip on them.

Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
