New The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod Released
by John Papadopoulos · DSOGamingIn July 2025, we informed you about an early WIP RTX Remix Mod for The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. Sadly, the last update for it was in August 2025. So, we can assume the project is dead. Thankfully, though, there is another mod that just came out. So, let’s take a look at it.
Created by Naeluk58, this new RTX Remix Mod adds real-time Path Tracing to Morrowind. Moreover, it comes with PBR materials. As such, environments and objects should blend better with the new path traced lighting.
Needless to say, this isn’t the final version of the mod. So, expect some visual bugs and glitches. Nevertheless, it’s in a pretty solid state, allowing you to play the entire game with Path Tracing.
Those interested can go ahead and download the mod from this link. At the end of the article, you can also find a video for it. This video shows off the new Path Tracing lighting. So, be sure to watch it as it can give you an idea of what you can expect from it. Furthermore, the NexusMods page has some comparison screenshots. These can give you an even better idea of what this Path Tracing Mod brings to the table.
Once you have downloaded it, you can follow this installation guide. As you will see, this isn’t a simple “drag and drop” mod, which may put off some gamers. Still, it is worth doing all this to marvel at Morrowind with Path Tracing. At least in my opinion.
- Download latest remix-xxx-release.zip from https://github.com/NVIDIAGameWorks/rtx-remix/releases/tag/remix-1.5.2
Place content of the package next to your Morrowind.exe, so for example d3d9.dll and “.trex” folder is in the same folder as Morrowind.exe
- Download latest dll from https://github.com/crosire/d3d8to9/releases
Place this dll in the same folder as your Morrowind.exe, …\Morrowind\d3d8.dll
- Install Morrowind Script Extender https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/45468
Then, place content of the package next to your Morrowind.exe and run MWSE-Update.exe
- Install Morrowind Code Patch https://www.nexusmods.com/morrowind/mods/19510
Place content of the package next to your Morrowind.exe, and run Morrowind Code Patch.exe, that should be in the same folder as Morrowind.exe at that point.
Tested with default options selected, click Apply chosen patches button, then close the app after its done patching.
- Unzip my mod and place it in the same folder as your Morrowind.exe, so that this path matches yours:
examples:
..\Morrowind\rtx-remix\mods\PBRvanillaRTXRemixMorrowind\mod.pkg
and
..\Morrowind\rtx.conf
- In Morrowind Launcher app, Options, select Pixel Shading to Off (water would not render if On).
If you want to play older games with Path Tracing, you should try these mods. For instance, you can find such mods for Black Mesa, Star Wars Republic Commando, Need for Speed Carbon, NFS: Underground, and Manhunt. You can also find more for BioShock, NFS: Underground 2, Star Wars Jedi Outcast, and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines.
And that’s not all. Modders have released demos for their Path Tracing Mods for Deus Ex, Mirror’s Edge, and Tomb Raider. And then we have the RTX Remix Mods for Painkiller and Left 4 Dead 2. Unreal Tournament 2004 and Unreal Gold have also gotten the path-traced treatment. Half-Life fans can also play the game with Full Ray Tracing/Path Tracing. A demo has also come out for a Path Tracing Mod for Duke Nukem 3D. Then we have the beta release of the Dark Souls 2 Path Tracing Mod. Lastly, you can download these amazing Path Tracing Mods for Doom, Doom 2, Quake, GTA 4, and Serious Sam. These last ones are among the best Path Tracing Mods you can find. So, don’t skip on them.
Enjoy and stay tuned for more!
