Unreal Revived Brings a Major Upgrade With a DX12 Renderer, VR, and Widescreen Support

In 2018, we informed you about a mod that attempted to remaster the classic Unreal game. At that time, only a couple of levels were working with it. And now, over eight years later, we have a version that lets you play the entire game.

Unreal Revived, formerly known as Unreal VR, is a modernization package for playing the original Unreal Gold on modern PCs. It keeps the original game content and gameplay while adding a new DX12 renderer. It also adds better display options, updated menus, improved controls, and wide gamepad support. This includes Xbox Series controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense, and other SDL-compatible controllers.

What’s also cool here is that Unreal Revived also supports VR. As such, those with a VR headset will be able to play this classic FPS in VR. Since we don’t get a lot of new VR games, these VR mods are a dream come true for all VR gamers.

It’s also worth noting that Unreal Revived supports 4K resolutions and widescreen monitors. It also has a number of post-processing effects, including CRT scanlines. Moreover, the new DX12 renderer supports corrected HD lightmaps, high-quality textures, alpha blending, and configurable VSync.

You can go ahead and download Unreal Revived from here. Do note that Unreal Revived does not contain any in-game assets. As such, you’ll also need to download Unreal Gold from here. The good news is that Unreal Gold is free to download. So, you won’t have to pay for anything in order to play Unreal Revived.

Now, while this is really cool, I still believe that the best way to re-experience Unreal is via the RTX Remix Path Tracing Mod. I had a blast when I replayed it in December 2025. The RTX Remix Mod looked amazing, and I did not have any stability issues with it. If you own a high-end NVIDIA RTX GPU, you should try it.

Speaking of the first Unreal, Unreal Redux is another project that aims to remaster it. Sadly, though, we haven’t heard anything about it for almost a year. So, I don’t know if this fan remaster is dead.

Anyway, if you don’t like the art changes of RTX Remix Path Tracing and want the vanilla experience on a modern PC, you should give Unreal Revived a go.
