Why Robert Pattinson Doubts That His Batman Will Be In James Gunn's DC Universe

There remains a great many questions regarding the future of Batman in the new DC Universe. DC Studios co-head James Gunn has confirmed that Robert Pattinson's Batman won't join the new DCU. Be that as it may, many fans still believe that the star of "The Batman" and the upcoming "The Batman: Part II" should carry the torch forward into the shared universe. Pattinson, however, has his doubts.
During a recent interview with LADbible while promoting his new movie "Primetime," Pattinson was asked about the potential of bringing his Batman into the DCU. The actor made it pretty clear that he doesn't see it happening, mostly because the world that director Matt Reeves has crafted is pretty darn specific. Here's what he had to say about it:
"I think it would be kind of tough to have this version of Bruce outside of [Reeves'] world. It's one of the only characters I guess because of the length of the shoots but also it's such a specific kind of [style], the tone of it gets inside you. I remember that happened to me the last time I did it, it took a while. You're just in the dark, the whole time. Both mood-wise and light-wise, I can't see anything for like months."
I've personally argued that bringing Reeves' Batman into the larger DC Universe is a terrible idea, in no small part because of the point that Pattinson is making here. As it exists, taking "The Batman" and making it fit into the same universe as Gunn's "Superman" feels like trying to square peg/round hole the situation. It just doesn't make sense. That's not to say it couldn't, but it's difficult to picture.

"The Batman: Part II" is filming now and will put Robert Pattinson's Batman in the snow. Much remains secretive about the long-awaited Matt Reeves sequel, but we're going to see Gotham City during wintertime. By the time the sequel hits theaters, it will have been almost six years between installments. Pattinson has kept himself busy with other things, becoming one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors.
If he could envision his Bruce Wayne existing alongside David Corenswet's Superman, would he even want to do that? Based on other comments he made in the same interview, it's easy to imagine Pattinson might want to move on from the Caped Crusader. Speaking further, the actor explained:
"It's so funny, because Gotham is Watford. It's a shed in Watford. There's something so destabilising about when you're just, you're in the dark the whole time. I mean just for eight months in the dark and you literally have no conception of being connected to anything in the world."
Pattinson added that it was "difficult to even maintain your sanity."
The DCU's Batman is supposed to appear in "The Flash" director Andy Muschietti's "The Brave and the Bold," at least when it was announced. Updates on that movie have been few and far between. There's been no indication as to who is being eyed to take up the mantle in that film, though rumors have persisted on the internet.
Most recently, "Lanterns" episode 6 featured a reference to the live-action Batman in the DCU, but that's about all we've had thus far. Most likely, Pattinson is going to stick to the Reeves-verse and James Gunn will cast his preferred actor as Batman at some point in the not-too-distant future.
"The Batman: Part II" hits theaters on February 18, 2028.
