Greece’s Mount Olympus Aims for UNESCO World Heritage List Recognition

by · Greek City Times

LITOCHORO, Greece – Greece is making a renewed push to secure international recognition for its most iconic mountain, as Mount Olympus — the mythological home of the 12 Olympian gods — is under consideration for UNESCO World Heritage List status.

Greece Pushes Mount Olympus for UNESCO World Heritage Status

Rising dramatically to 2,918 metres (9,573 feet) from near sea level, the snow-capped peak has inspired awe for millennia. Ancient Greeks believed it was the throne of Zeus, king of the gods, whose court overlooked the mortal world from its mist-shrouded heights.

The nomination, which seeks recognition as a mixed cultural and natural site, will be examined by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee during its meeting in Busan, South Korea, from Sunday until July 29.

Speaking to the Associated Press, Evagelos Geroliolios, Mayor of Dion-Olympus, whose municipality includes the main gateway town of Litochoro, expressed deep local pride:

“Olympus is our life. It is the place we grew up in. It is the place we see every day, but at the same time, it is also a place which carries with it myth, history, biodiversity, extraordinary beauty and a very great cultural weight.”

The mountain’s extraordinary significance stems from both its natural grandeur and its unparalleled place in Greek mythology. It was here, according to legend, that Zeus established his rule after defeating the Titans in a decade-long war.

Local authorities and cultural experts hope that UNESCO recognition will highlight not only Olympus’s rich biodiversity and dramatic landscapes but also its immense cultural and historical importance to Greece and the wider world.

Cinematic Boost on the Horizon

Interest in Mount Olympus is also expected to surge with the imminent theatrical release of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, which features the mountain as the seat of Zeus and the Olympian gods who shape the fate of Homer’s hero.

The timing could not be better, as the film is anticipated to renew global fascination with ancient Greek mythology and drive “set-jetting” tourism to the region.

Greece already boasts 19 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Successful inscription of Mount Olympus would further strengthen the country’s cultural diplomacy and elevate its profile as a destination of profound historical and natural heritage.
