Serres Father Bites Into Glass in His Toddler’s Koulouri
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesA 35-year-old man in Serres suffered a koulouri glass injury when a 2.1-centimetre shard hidden in the sesame bread ring cut his tongue and palate, his lawyer said.
The incident happened on Wednesday 21 October. His three-year-old child had already eaten about half of the koulouri before the father finished it.
Bleeding from the mouth, he went to the city’s general hospital for first aid. He did not swallow the shard, which measures 2.1 by 0.6 centimetres.
How the koulouri glass injury happened
Lawyer Dimitris Golemis said his client bought the koulouri from a bakery in the city of Serres. It belongs to a chain that runs other bakeries too, he said.

“Things could have turned out even worse, as my client bought the koulouri for his child, who is three years old,” Golemis said.
The toddler ate about half and left the rest, so the father picked it up. He suddenly felt the glass in his mouth and, luckily, did not swallow it, the lawyer said.
“Imagine if the child had eaten it,” he added.
Family turns to the authorities
The family has the receipt for the purchase, Golemis said. They have also sent an extrajudicial notice to the bakery company about the koulouri glass injury, but so far they have had no reply.
Golemis said the family will also take the case to every competent authority, including the national food safety regulator, EFET. “Food safety is a very serious public health issue,” Golemis said.
EFET handles consumer complaints about food across the country. In June, after a complaint about a suspected foodborne illness, Attica authorities stopped tonnes of unsuitable meat from reaching the market.
Koulouri, a sesame-crusted bread ring, is a popular street food and a staple breakfast snack across Greece.
Since the koulouri glass injury, the family’s priority has been protecting other consumers, the lawyer said. They will also pursue the matter administratively, civilly and criminally, he said.
