Greece Launches €350 Million Space Initiative to Boost Satellite Capabilities

Greece has announced a major new national space program, HELLAS-SPACE 2.0, backed by a €350 million budget. The initiative, presented by the Ministry of Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence, aims to expand the country’s space capabilities and develop its satellite ecosystem.

The program will be managed by the General Secretariat of Telecommunications and Post. It draws funding from the Recovery and Resilience Fund (Greece 2.0) and is being developed in partnership with the European Space Agency.

According to ministry officials, HELLAS-SPACE 2.0 forms a central element of Greece’s broader national space strategy. It focuses on several key areas: building space infrastructure, expanding the use of satellite data and applications, supporting the local space industry, advancing research and innovation, and training highly skilled professionals.

Among the planned projects are very high-resolution satellites designed to generate advanced geospatial information. The program will also include thermal imaging satellites intended for civil protection, environmental monitoring, and security purposes.

The initiative marks a significant step in Greece’s efforts to establish a stronger presence in the European and global space sectors.
