The Cycladic island of Andros has been named the top Greek destination for French travellers seeking an authentic experience away from the country’s busiest tourist hotspots.

The recognition comes from popular French travel website Liligo.fr, which featured Andros first in a list of 10 destinations across Greece recommended for travellers looking to discover a quieter and less conventional side of the country.

The feature is significant for Andros given Liligo’s strong presence in the French travel market. Its “Magazine du Voyageur” offers destination inspiration, travel advice and tourism news to millions of users.

Liligo describes Andros as the second largest island in the Cyclades, highlighting its distinctive character compared with many of its neighbouring islands. The publication points to the island’s high quality tourism services, lush landscapes, rugged valleys, historic and religious monuments, picturesque villages, natural beaches and numerous springs.

The island’s extensive network of walking trails, traditional architecture and rich cultural heritage are also presented as key attractions for visitors seeking an authentic Greek experience.

The feature forms part of a wider tourism promotion initiative involving the Municipality of Andros and the Greek National Tourism Organisation.

Accessibility is another factor highlighted by Liligo. International visitors can fly to Athens before travelling to the port of Rafina, from where ferries reach Andros in around two hours. The island can also be accessed from Mykonos, making it easy to combine with other Cycladic destinations.

The emphasis on connections through Athens and Mykonos is particularly relevant to the French market, positioning Andros as a destination that can be easily incorporated into a wider Greek island itinerary.

Nikos Moustakas, Tourism Councillor for the Municipality of Andros, welcomed the recognition, describing the island’s first place ranking as important exposure for the destination and confirmation of its tourism potential.

“Andros offers an exceptionally rich and diverse tourism experience,” Moustakas said, pointing to its natural environment, walking trails, villages, architecture, history, culture and beaches.

He also highlighted the island’s food, entertainment and quality tourism services at reasonable prices, saying that the combination of these features creates a broad range of experiences for travellers with different interests.

The French recognition further strengthens Andros’ growing profile as an alternative Cycladic destination, offering visitors the beauty of the Greek islands without the same level of development and crowds found on some of Greece’s most famous destinations.
