Athens Airport named Europe’s most efficient large airport

Athens International Airport has been named Europe’s most efficient airport among airports serving more than 30 million passengers annually by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS).

The airport received the 2026 Europe Airport Efficiency Excellence Award following the release of ATRS’s Global Annual Benchmarking Report, which assesses the performance of almost 200 commercial airports worldwide each year.

The ranking evaluates airports across a range of measures, including financial efficiency, competitiveness and productivity, as well as their broader economic and social contribution.

Athens International Airport was recognised for its contribution to Greece’s aviation and tourism sectors, as well as its wider economic and social impact.

The award was accepted on behalf of Athens International Airport by Chief Financial Officer Nadia Xyrogianni and Manager of Investor Relations Giorgos Eleftheriou.

The latest recognition adds to Athens Airport’s strong record in the ATRS rankings.

AIA previously received the top efficiency award in Europe in its passenger category in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2020.

The latest award comes as Athens International Airport continues to play a central role in Greece’s rapidly expanding tourism and aviation sectors, connecting the capital with destinations across Europe and around the world.
