Athens Airport Named Europe’s Best for Operational Efficiency

by · Greek City Times

Athens International Airport (AIA) has received another major international distinction after being named Europe’s most efficient airport in the category of airports serving more than 30 million passengers annually.

The award was presented by the Air Transport Research Society (ATRS), one of the aviation industry’s leading international research and benchmarking organisations.

ATRS honoured Athens International Airport with the 2026 Europe Airport Efficiency Excellence Award, based on the findings of its Global Annual Benchmarking Report, which evaluates the performance of nearly 200 commercial airports worldwide each year.

The ATRS awards recognise airports that demonstrate outstanding performance across a broad range of indicators, including financial efficiency, competitiveness, productivity, and their wider contribution to economic growth and society.

In a statement, Athens International Airport said the award recognises its significant economic and social impact, as well as its growing contribution to Greece’s aviation and tourism sectors.

“In today’s highly dynamic business environment, airports play a decisive role in economic development and social prosperity at national, regional and local levels,” the airport said, adding that the distinction reflects its expanding role in creating value for both the economy and society.

The award was accepted on behalf of Athens International Airport by Nadia Xirogianni, Chief Financial Officer, and George Eleftheriou, Director of Investor Relations.

The latest honour adds to a series of international recognitions received by Athens International Airport from ATRS. The airport previously won the organisation’s top European efficiency award in its category in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2020, reinforcing its reputation as one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs.
