Lightning Activity Prevents Planes from Landing in Corfu

A severe thunderstorm with heavy rain and intense lightning disrupted air traffic in Corfu on Tuesday afternoon, September 15, forcing three international flights to divert to alternative airports.

The storm particularly affected the area around Corfu Airport, where roads flooded after a large volume of rain fell within a short period.

Intense lightning activity also prevented three international flights from safely landing on the island.

A Ryanair flight from Prague was due to arrive at Corfu Airport at 6:40pm, followed by a Marabu flight from Hamburg at 6:45pm and an AirBaltic flight from Riga at 6:50pm.

All three flights changed course and landed at alternative airports to protect passengers and crew from the severe weather conditions.

According to FlightRadar, the Ryanair and Marabu flights landed at Aktion Airport in Preveza, while the AirBaltic flight diverted to Brindisi Airport in Italy.

The severe weather caused significant disruption around Corfu Airport as the island experienced heavy rainfall and intense lightning during the afternoon.
