Greece Moves Ahead with RM-70 Rocket Launcher Upgrade

by · Greek City Times

Greece has moved forward with a major modernisation programme for its 122mm RM-70 multiple rocket launchers, following the opening of tender submissions at the General Directorate for Defence Investments and Armaments (GDDIA).

The €90.57 million defence programme covers the comprehensive upgrade of 111 launchers, which have long formed a backbone of the Hellenic Army’s frontline artillery capabilities.

Range and precision significantly improved

The most significant upgrade will enhance the systems’ operational range and targeting accuracy.

Although the launchers will retain the ability to fire the Hellenic Army’s existing stockpile of rockets, new electronic systems and digital fire-control computers will enable them to use next-generation ammunition.

The upgrade will double the RM-70’s maximum range from approximately 20 kilometres to more than 40 kilometres.

This improvement will give the Hellenic Army the ability to deliver precision strikes deep behind enemy lines, establish a powerful area-denial capability and strengthen deterrence in strategically important regions.

Digital systems and faster response times

The modernisation programme will introduce a fully digital Fire Control System, a ballistic computer and an integrated inertial navigation system with GPS.

These technologies will significantly reduce the time required to orient the launchers and acquire targets.

The upgraded RM-70 will be able to reach a firing position, launch its rockets and leave within minutes using the shoot-and-scoot tactic. This will help crews avoid detection and retaliatory fire from enemy artillery.

According to reports, the programme will also extensively upgrade the carrier vehicles with new chassis, more powerful engines and, most importantly, new armoured cabins.

The redesigned cabins will provide crews with enhanced ballistic protection against shrapnel, small-arms fire and nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) threats.

Modernisation to take place in Greece

The Ministry of National Defence’s tender sets strict requirements to support the domestic economy and defence industry.

All modernisation work on the 111 vehicles must take place in Greece, at facilities selected for the programme. The tender also requires Greek defence industry participation to account for at least 25% of the total project.

Following the opening of the initial tender submissions, the competent GDDIA committee will proceed with technical and legal evaluations.

Once the committee completes its assessment and the relevant objection periods expire, shortlisted bidders will submit their final binding financial offers.

The Hellenic Army General Staff (HAGS) has secured full funding for the programme through its budget, with expenditure spread over six years until 2031.
