Mock dogfight erupts amid Turkish airspace violations over Aegean

Turkish warplanes and drones violated Greek airspace 17 times over the Aegean Sea on Thursday, Greek officials said. In one incident, a Greek fighter jet scrambled to intercept them became involved in a simulated dogfight with a Turkish pilot.

Violations had also been recorded over the previous three days. Thursday’s encounter marked the first simulated dogfight since 10 July and the eighth such incident this year.

The episode occurred a day after Greece confirmed it would proceed with a major undersea power cable linking the Greek and Cypriot electricity grids — a project strongly opposed by Turkey.

According to Greek officials, two of Thursday’s breaches involved armed US-made Turkish F-16 fighter jets. One of those jets engaged in the mock dogfight with the Greek aircraft sent to intercept it. A Turkish ATR-72 turboprop reconnaissance aircraft and unmanned drones were also among the aircraft that entered Greek airspace.
