Greek Patriot air defence systems have been activated again in Saudi Arabia, successfully engaging a ballistic missile and an unmanned aerial vehicle.

At 1:40pm on Thursday, September 24, the Patriot Guided Missile Battery of the Hellenic Force in Saudi Arabia (ELDYSA) engaged two aerial threats, launching two interceptor missiles, according to an official update.

The Greek battery fired one missile against a ballistic missile and another against a UAV, as part of Greece’s participation in the international Integrated Air Missile Defense (IAMD) Concept initiative supporting the air defence of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The latest engagement marks another operational use of the Greek Patriot system in Saudi Arabia, where Greek military personnel have been deployed to support the protection of critical infrastructure and the country’s airspace.

Greek Patriots remain operational

The ELDYSA Patriot battery has previously been involved in multiple interceptions of aerial threats over Saudi Arabia.

In August, Greek personnel operated the Patriot system against hostile UAVs, launching three missiles in an engagement conducted jointly with Saudi air defence systems.

The Greek battery has also previously intercepted ballistic missiles and drones launched towards the Yanbu area.

The latest engagement comes amid heightened regional tensions and continued missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia.

Despite the latest activation, the Hellenic Force in Saudi Arabia continues its mission as normal, according to the Greek military update.

Greece has maintained the Patriot deployment in Saudi Arabia since 2021 under the bilateral defence arrangement supporting the Kingdom’s air defence capabilities.
