Drones and Artificial Intelligence to Transform Greek Airports

Fraport Greece and the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) have launched a five-year strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of Greece’s regional airports through artificial intelligence, drones and advanced robotics.

The collaboration will focus on joint research and development (R&D) initiatives designed to improve operational efficiency, enhance passenger services and support the next generation of smart airport technologies.

Under the agreement, the two organisations will develop a range of innovative solutions, including drone-based inspections of airport infrastructure, AI-powered predictive maintenance for critical assets, intelligent systems to optimise passenger flow and terminal operations, and digital applications that improve both operational performance and the passenger experience.

The partnership will also explore robotic solutions to assist passengers, autonomous logistics systems, enhanced airport security technologies and other innovations to support airport operations.

Fraport Greece Chief Information and Telecommunications Officer John Theofilos said the agreement marks the beginning of a strategic partnership that connects cutting-edge research with the practical demands of airport operations.

“Our priority is to deliver our strategic vision for the next generation of smart airports, ensuring they are ready to meet future challenges,” he said.

“Together, we will transform innovation into practical solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance the passenger experience and shape the airports of the future.”

Dr Dimitrios Tzovaras, Research Director at CERTH’s Information Technologies Institute, welcomed the collaboration, saying it would bring research and innovation closer to the real-world needs of modern airports.

He said artificial intelligence, robotics, data analytics and intelligent management platforms would help improve operational efficiency while strengthening airport safety, sustainability and passenger services.

Tzovaras added that the partnership has the potential to become a benchmark for the digital transformation of airports, creating long-term value for both the aviation sector and passengers.
