Strike Hits Greek-Operated Tanker in Strait of Hormuz

A projectile struck an inbound tanker in the Strait of Hormuz early on Monday, 21 September, and injured two seafarers, UK Maritime Trade Operations says.

UKMTO, citing military authorities, reports an unknown projectile hit the ship. The two crew members have minor injuries. The tanker stayed under its own power and continued to its next port. UKMTO reports no environmental damage so far and tells other ships to use caution.

TradeWinds describes the vessel as a Greek-controlled product tanker and says the incident is part of a run of attacks on oil carriers since Thursday, including a hit on a Scorpio Tankers ship.

Maritime security firm Vanguard Tech identifies the Monday casualty as LR Stephanie, a 72,825-dwt tanker flying the Isle of Man flag and linked to Universal Tankers in Greece. AIS later showed the ship inside the Persian Gulf.

UKMTO has logged several tanker incidents in the waterway since mid-September, among them STI Steadfast (Scorpio) and, according to Indian reports, the LPG carrier Al Maryah. UKMTO itself called Monday’s projectile “unknown.” TradeWinds and other maritime outlets attribute the wider campaign to Iran as US forces say they are keeping the strait open.
