Greece and Amazon Plan Major Data Centre in Kozani

Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis has described the planned data centre in Kozani, Western Macedonia, as a major project for both the region and Greece as a whole, following an agreement between Public Power Corporation (PPC) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Speaking after his visit to the Western Macedonia region, Hatzidakis said the project would initially have a capacity of 300 MW, with the potential to expand to 1 GW in the future.

“I was just informed about a very large project, not only for Western Macedonia but for the whole of Greece. It concerns the data centre that will be developed in the Kozani area as part of the recent agreement between PPC and Amazon. The initial phase of the project provides for a capacity of 300 MW, with the prospect of future expansion to as much as 1 GW.”

Hatzidakis also highlighted Amazon’s role in supplying the technological equipment for the data centre, saying that “the equipment is a matter for Amazon”.

The project is also expected to create hundreds of jobs. Hatzidakis estimated that the first 300 MW phase would employ around 400 to 500 people, mainly scientists and highly skilled specialists.

“When it is completed, because there is a prospect of reaching up to 1,000 MW, we will be talking about 1,500 employees,” he said.

Hatzidakis expressed satisfaction with the investment prospects and linked the project to PPC’s transformation over recent years. He recalled that in 2019, when he served as Minister of Environment and Energy, he inherited a PPC that “was on the brink”.

The PPC-AWS agreement forms part of a broader plan to repurpose Western Macedonia’s former lignite facilities and transform the region into a hub for energy and digital infrastructure.
