On Sunday the Pedion tou Areos did not look like a park. It looked like a crowd that had decided, for one morning, not to let breast cancer have the last word.

More than 58,000 people across Greece joined the 18th Greece Race for the Cure. Some ran the 5 kilometres. Some walked the 2. Plenty came in pink, with a name on a T-shirt, a photo in a pocket, or a friend they did not want to leave at home. Survivors were there. So were families, children, and people who had never met the woman they were walking for.

The weekend had started on Saturday, 3 October, with the quieter part of the job: information stands, fitness sessions, workshops, a children’s corner, and the expo where people actually stop and ask questions. On Sunday, 4 October, the park and the streets around it filled up. Others joined from outside Athens, running or walking where they live.

The race is organised by Alma Zois, the Panhellenic Association of Women with Breast Cancer, with Think Pink Europe’s approval, and with the Municipality of Athens and OPANDA. It is the second-largest Race for the Cure in Europe. The money does not sit in a pot. Alma Zois uses the net proceeds for free support and information all year, for prevention and early diagnosis, and for pushing better care.

Association president Paraskevi Michalopoulou put it simply. The race is over, she said, but the message is not. More than 58,000 people walked, ran and got emotional for the same reason: life, hope, and the idea that no one should go through this alone. That trust, she added, is what lets the association stay beside women and their families after the banners come down.

Haris Doukas, the mayor of Athens, OPANDA president Roxani Bey, and people from the Attica Region, medicine and other breast-cancer groups spoke at the event. Behind them were 745 volunteers. Maria Konstantaki presented it again this year.

The pink shirts will be washed. The point of the morning was the part that stays: information, early checks, and someone to stand next to.
