BREAKING: Fire erupts aboard cargo ship north of Mykonos

A major firefighting operation is underway in the Aegean after a fire broke out aboard the Greek flagged Ro-Ro cargo vessel BLUE CARRIER 2 north of Mykonos.

The vessel was carrying 166 trucks and 29 passenger vehicles, with 29 people on board, including 28 crew members and one passenger.

Four Coast Guard vessels, a patrol vessel, firefighting boats from Syros and Lavrio, and a firefighting vessel from Piraeus have been deployed.

Tugboats, private vessels and nearby ships are also assisting, while the firefighting and salvage vessel AIGAION PELAGOS is sailing from Piraeus to the scene.

Authorities are continuing efforts to contain the blaze and assess the situation.
