by · Greek City Times

Greek authorities have seized more than 207 kilograms of raw cannabis at Athens International Airport, after discovering the drugs concealed in a shipment declared as clothing from Thailand. Authorities estimate the cannabis had a potential street value of €1 million.

The operation took place at Athens International Airport’s Eleftherios Venizelos facility, with the Hellenic Police’s Narcotics Sub-Directorate working closely with the airport customs department responsible for combating smuggling.

Authorities acted on intelligence indicating that the drugs had arrived by air from Asia in August.

During a targeted inspection at a temporary cargo storage warehouse, police officers discovered two pallets containing 48 cardboard boxes, according to ERT.

Although the accompanying documents declared the shipment as clothing originating from Thailand, officers found 207 kilograms and 466 grams of raw cannabis inside the boxes and seized the entire quantity.

The operation prevented the drugs from reaching the illegal market, where they could have generated an estimated €1 million in proceeds.
