The Cycladic island of Syros has received significant international exposure through extensive features in two of Italy’s most recognised publications, National Geographic Italia and Vogue Italia.
The features followed a familiarisation trip (Fam Trip) organised in July as part of the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupoli’s targeted tourism promotion and international outreach efforts aimed at the Italian market.
National Geographic Italia feature on Syros and the Cyclades
National Geographic Italia published an extensive travel feature by Francesco Consiglio, titled “Alla scoperta delle Cicladi: un viaggio tra le perle dell’Egeo, da Syros e Naxos fino a Ios.”
The article places Syros at the centre of its proposed Cycladic journey and portrays the island as a destination with a distinctive identity that differs from Greece’s more heavily promoted islands.
It highlights the neoclassical elegance of Ermoupoli, the island’s vibrant cultural activity and its character as a small regional capital that remains active throughout the year.
The feature also explores Syros’ historical and archaeological heritage, including Ano Syros, Vaporia, St Nicholas Church, Miaouli Square and the Apollo Theatre.
It also draws attention to Ermoupoli’s industrial and cultural heritage and to a painting by El Greco (Domenikos Theotokopoulos) housed in the Church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.
Beyond Ermoupoli, National Geographic Italia highlights Kini, Posidonia, Galissas and Agathopes, along with Syros’ distinctive natural landscape.
Vogue Italia feature on Syros and Ios
Vogue Italia subsequently published a feature titled “Un weekend in Grecia a Syros e Ios, tra le isole più autentiche e ricche di cultura delle Cicladi,” written by journalist and Vogue Italia editor Veronica Cristino.
Vogue presents Syros as the cultural heart of the Cyclades and as an authentic, sophisticated and human-scale destination, away from the characteristics of mass tourism and heavily developed resorts.
The feature focuses on the coexistence of history and tradition with modern everyday life, highlighting Ermoupoli’s cultural scene, Ano Syros, the Apollo Theatre and the island’s industrial and textile heritage.
The article also includes photographs taken by Cristino during her visit, capturing Syros’ architecture, atmosphere and distinctive character.
According to the Municipality of Syros-Ermoupoli’s tourism department, the two features demonstrate the value of targeted familiarisation trips and partnerships with respected international media representatives.
Such initiatives, the municipality says, are helping strengthen Syros’ position in the European travel market and promote the island as a destination focused on culture, history, authentic experiences and quality tourism.
Syros Deputy Mayor for Tourism Giannis Voutsinos said the island’s presence in National Geographic and Vogue represents an important result of the municipality’s systematic international promotion efforts.
He stressed that the coverage resulted from the July familiarisation trip and from the journalists’ direct contact with Syros, its people, history and culture.
Voutsinos said the municipality would continue its targeted international outreach campaigns, seeking long-term, high-quality exposure with a meaningful impact on the destination.
