Devolved leaders unite to demand independence referendum rights

A fresh constitutional challenge to the UK is set to emerge on Monday as the leaders of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland gather in Cardiff to demand the right to hold independence referendums.

Scotland’s First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney, alongside Plaid Cymru and Sinn Féin leaders, will sign a new cooperation agreement covering the economy, energy, Europe and self-determination.

The agreement is expected to strengthen cooperation between the devolved administrations and put renewed pressure on Westminster over the constitutional future of the UK.

Swinney has described the UK’s current political system as “not sustainable”, as the SNP continues to push for another Scottish independence referendum.
