Greece Considers Relocating Patriot Battery to Souda Amid Iranian Threats

The Greek Ministry of National Defence is examining contingency plans to strengthen the country’s air defence network amid recent threats from Iran against European nations, according to ministry sources.

One scenario under consideration is the relocation of the Patriot air defence battery currently stationed on Karpathos to Souda, Crete, should the security situation require it.

The discussions come amid growing concerns over the possibility of attacks targeting European countries and follow reports by the Financial Times regarding Iran’s consideration of potential strikes against US military assets in Europe.

Greek defence officials are also examining the possibility of providing Bulgaria with support to strengthen its anti aircraft and anti ballistic defence capabilities through the deployment of a Greek Patriot system.

Such a move would require a formal request from Bulgaria and approval by the Government Council for National Security, known as KYSEA.

Meanwhile, Greek military assets remain deployed to help reinforce the security of Cyprus. Four Hellenic Air Force F 16 fighter jets and the Hellenic Navy frigate Nikiforos Fokas continue to be stationed in the region.

The potential repositioning of the Patriot battery and possible assistance to Bulgaria form part of broader contingency planning by Greek defence authorities as regional tensions continue to evolve.
