Storm Agneta Floods Rhodes, Sweeps Away 60 Cars and Damages Homes Across Greece
by Bill Giannopoulos · Greek City TimesStorm Agneta has caused extensive flooding and damage across Greece, with Rhodes bearing the brunt of the severe weather after torrential overnight rainfall turned roads into raging torrents, swept away dozens of vehicles and flooded homes and businesses.
The eastern Dodecanese island experienced particularly severe conditions in the early hours of Monday, November 2, with the village of Archangelos among the worst affected.
An overflowing river sent large volumes of water through the area, inundating streets, damaging commercial properties and sweeping vehicles away in the powerful current.

According to initial reports, at least 60 vehicles were swept away and damaged, while dozens of homes and businesses were flooded.
The neighbouring areas of Afantou and villages in southern Rhodes also experienced flooding, with heavy rainfall creating dangerous conditions across the road network.
Second 112 emergency alert issued for Rhodes
Authorities issued two emergency alerts through Greece’s 112 civil protection system as conditions deteriorated.
The first message was sent at approximately 3.30 am, warning residents and visitors of dangerous rainfall and rising water levels, particularly around Archangelos.
A second emergency warning followed at 10.52 am, urging people to restrict their movements to those absolutely necessary and follow instructions from authorities.
Traffic was suspended at several locations, including Kolympia, Kalathos and Archangelos, as emergency services worked to address flooding and restore safe access.
Firefighters, Civil Protection personnel, regional authorities and volunteer groups were mobilised to assist affected communities.
Operations included removing vehicles swept away by floodwaters, clearing drainage systems, restoring water flow in streams obstructed by debris and carrying out interventions across the damaged road network.
Although the worst rainfall had eased by Monday morning, authorities remained on heightened alert amid warnings that further storms could develop.
Schools closed across four municipal districts
The Municipality of Rhodes announced the closure of schools on Monday, November 2, across four municipal units: Archangelos, Afantou, Lindos and South Rhodes.
The precautionary decision was taken to protect students and teachers and prevent unnecessary travel through areas affected by severe flooding.
Firefighters respond across the Aegean and mainland Greece
The Fire Service reported a significant number of emergency calls across several regions of Greece.
On Samos, firefighters received 28 calls for assistance and carried out 10 water-pumping operations.
Across the Dodecanese, crews received 18 calls. On Rhodes, they pumped water from three locations, cut down a tree and helped two people reach safety.
On Kalymnos, firefighters carried out a water-pumping operation and removed a tree.
In the central Greek port city of Volos, emergency crews received 12 calls, conducting seven water-pumping operations and two tree-cutting operations.
Large boulder crashes into garage on Kalymnos
The severe weather also created a dangerous situation on Kalymnos, where a massive boulder broke loose from a hillside in the Agios Vasilios area and crashed into a garage.
The rock struck the structure, damaging it and a vehicle parked inside.
Kalymnos Mayor Giannis Mastrokoukos told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency that the boulder stopped against the garage, potentially preventing a much more serious incident.
A residential complex is located immediately below the structure.
The mayor warned that the consequences could have been far worse had the garage not stopped the falling rock, given the homes situated further down the slope.
Severe weather warning extended through Tuesday
Greece’s National Meteorological Service (EMY) has updated its severe weather bulletin, warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms through Tuesday, November 3.
The most affected areas are expected to include western and northern Greece, as well as the eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese. Local hailstorms are also possible.
For Monday, heavy rain and thunderstorms are forecast across the Ionian islands from midday, followed by Epirus, western Central Greece and the western and southern Peloponnese from the afternoon.
The Dodecanese is expected to experience intermittent severe weather until late Monday night.
On Tuesday, storms are forecast to continue across the Ionian islands until midday and in Epirus, western Central Greece and the western and southern Peloponnese until the afternoon.
Central and eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the northern and eastern Aegean islands and the Dodecanese are also expected to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms from the early morning until late afternoon.
Authorities are urging residents and visitors to avoid flooded roads, stay away from overflowing streams and follow official Civil Protection instructions as Storm Agneta continues to affect Greece.
