The generosity shown in memory of beloved Greek singer Giorgos Mazonakis will now help feed people in need across Greece.

More than €11,000 in donations made following Mazonakis’ death will be used to establish a mobile community kitchen, Humanity Greece announced on Thursday.

The organisation said it received a total of €11,130.26 after Mazonakis’ family asked mourners to make donations to Humanity Greece instead of sending funeral wreaths.

The funds will help lay the foundations for a mobile kitchen capable of travelling to areas where people and communities need support most.

The initiative gives a lasting humanitarian purpose to the outpouring of grief that followed the singer’s death on September 9, aged 54.

Thousands gathered in Nikaia on Monday, September 14, for Mazonakis’ funeral, singing, dancing and throwing flowers as they paid their final respects to one of Greece’s most recognisable performers.

Mazonakis was also known for quietly supporting charitable causes throughout his life, with his humanitarian side highlighted by Archbishop Ieronymos following his death.

Humanity Greece said the donations showed how his memory could continue to make a difference beyond his music.

“When a person leaves, what they leave behind is not only their memory,” the organisation said while announcing the final donation total.

Now, that legacy will take a practical form, with a mobile kitchen designed to bring food and assistance directly to people who need it.

For a singer whose music touched generations of Greeks, the donations made in his name will ensure that his final legacy reaches far beyond the stage.
