BREAKING: EU Designates ChatGPT Under Digital Services Act as Reddit and Roblox Named Very Large Online Platforms

The European Union has designated ChatGPT as a search engine under the Digital Services Act (DSA), making it the first AI chatbot to receive such a designation.

The European Commission has also designated Reddit and Roblox as Very Large Online Platforms (VLOPs), placing all three services under stricter EU digital regulations.

The platforms now have four months to assess and address systemic risks linked to areas including the protection of minors, election integrity and public security.

Failure to comply with the DSA can result in fines of up to 6% of a company’s worldwide annual turnover.

EU Executive Vice President for Tech Sovereignty Henna Virkkunen said the European Commission would not hesitate to designate additional platforms if they meet the criteria under the legislation.
