A Greek Australian who has converted to Islam has sparked discussion online after making comments about the relationship between his Greek identity and his Islamic faith.

The man, who identifies himself online by the name “Muslim Spartan”, has built a presence on platforms including X and TikTok, where he regularly posts content about Islam.

Speaking at an Islamic conference known as the UNT Convention, he reportedly said:

“My Greek identity means nothing if it comes into conflict with Islam.”

The comment has prompted discussion among members of the Greek community, particularly over how national and cultural identity can intersect with religious beliefs.

The “Muslim Spartan” has also posted videos filmed on the streets of Melbourne, where he speaks with members of the public about Islam and discusses his religious beliefs.

His online activity has attracted attention among Greek Australians, with some questioning the views he expresses about Greek identity and its relationship with Islam.

There is no indication that promoting or discussing Islam in public is itself unlawful in Australia. Freedom of religion and freedom of expression are protected under Australian law, subject to legal limits.

The comments made at the UNT Convention, along with his public social media activity, have nevertheless fuelled debate online about identity, religion and the different ways members of the Greek diaspora understand their heritage.
