Greece Expands Diplomatic Engagement at UN General Assembly as Security Council Presidency Nears

Greece has stepped up its diplomatic engagement at the United Nations General Assembly, with Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis holding a series of high level meetings focused on regional security, maritime safety and international cooperation.

Speaking to ERT during the fifth day of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York, Gerapetritis highlighted Greece’s trilateral meetings with Cyprus, Jordan and Egypt, as well as bilateral contacts with foreign ministers from countries including Brazil, India and Eritrea.

The Greek Foreign Minister said the meetings were particularly significant as conflicts and instability continue across the wider Middle East, while Greece and Cyprus seek closer cooperation with partners across the region.

Greece and India focus on AI and maritime security

Greece and India also co hosted a high level event focused on artificial intelligence and emerging technologies, with particular emphasis on shipping, maritime security and freedom of navigation.

The event took place on the sidelines of the General Assembly and examined how advances in AI can be applied to maritime affairs while remaining aligned with broader principles of human progress and security. The United Nations confirmed Greece and India jointly organised the event.

Gerapetritis also took part in the inaugural meeting of the Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers.

For Greece, as one of the world’s major shipping nations, freedom of navigation remains a major international issue. Gerapetritis argued that disruptions to maritime routes can affect global supply chains and wider economic security.

Greece prepares to lead UN Security Council

Greece is also preparing to assume the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in October, the second time it will hold the rotating presidency during its current two year term.

Gerapetritis said the upcoming presidency comes at a particularly important moment, with armed conflicts and major international crises expected to feature prominently on the Council’s agenda.

The period will also coincide with the process for selecting the next UN Secretary General, a decision that Gerapetritis described as significant for the future direction of the organisation and international relations.

Greece’s wider programme at the 81st General Assembly has included meetings with officials from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and Latin America, with discussions covering the Middle East crisis, the war in Ukraine, developments in Sub Saharan Africa, UN reform and multilateral cooperation.

Gerapetritis said Greece was seeking to strengthen its international partnerships and increase its diplomatic engagement at a time of heightened global instability.

The 81st UN General Assembly opened on September 8, 2026, and will run through September 7, 2027.
