Greece to Inaugurate Daedalus Supercomputer on October 19

Greece’s national supercomputer Daedalus will be officially inaugurated on October 19, Digital Governance and Artificial Intelligence Minister Dimitris Papastergiou announced on Tuesday.

The inauguration will take place at the Lavrion Technological Cultural Park, marking a major step in Greece’s plans to expand its high performance computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Papastergiou made the announcement during an event marking 65 years of operation of the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos.

“We are joining forces with GRNET, Demokritos and Growthfund to provide infrastructure on which the next phase of artificial intelligence in our country will be built,” Papastergiou said.

He highlighted Greece’s growing role as a regional infrastructure hub, pointing to its geographical position between Europe, Asia and Africa and the network of telecommunications and energy cables crossing the country.

“Greece lies at the crossroads of three continents,” Papastergiou said, adding that the country is increasingly becoming a hub for data centres.

Greece plans next generation AI infrastructure

Papastergiou also said plans for GigaFactories, large scale artificial intelligence infrastructure designed to support very high computing demands, are moving towards implementation.

He said Greece is preparing to take the next major step after Daedalus through the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, with the aim of positioning the country among Europe’s leading locations for very large scale computing systems.

The government is also preparing to combine the capabilities of Daedalus with a new supercomputer planned for Kozani, Papastergiou said.

The first tenders for the Kozani project are expected to be launched in October.

The projects form part of Greece’s broader effort to expand domestic computing capacity and create infrastructure capable of supporting artificial intelligence research, applications and data intensive technologies.

The October 19 inauguration of Daedalus will therefore mark not only the launch of a new national computing facility, but also the beginning of a wider expansion of Greece’s high performance computing infrastructure.
