Explosive-Laden Drone Found Near Ukrainian Cargo Planes at Leipzig/Halle Airport

German authorities probe suspected sabotage after device with detonator discovered on apron; DHL freighter collides with unidentified object mid-air

German security authorities are investigating what appears to have been an attempted explosive drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport after a drone carrying a package containing explosive material was discovered late Tuesday night near Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.

According to reports from BILD and corroborated by other German media citing security sources, the drone was found around 23:40–23:42 local time on the airport apron in the immediate vicinity of one or more Ukrainian An-124 freighters. Leipzig/Halle is one of Europe’s key cargo hubs and has served as a base for Antonov Airlines operations supporting Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The attached package tested positive for nitrates. An X-ray examination revealed a detonator that investigators believe malfunctioned or had previously torn off, preventing detonation. Bomb-disposal teams used a remote-controlled robot to secure the device. The explosive package has been preserved for forensic analysis rather than destroyed. Security sources indicated the material may have been a relatively simple improvised explosive, potentially based on fertilizer and fuel.

Airport operations were temporarily suspended following the discovery. The southern runway remained closed longer while investigations continued. Several flights were diverted, including a passenger service.

Shortly after the airport closure, a DHL cargo aircraft aborted its landing approach. It later struck an unidentified object approximately 400 meters above the ground and about six kilometers from the airport. The freighter diverted and landed safely in Hanover, where damage to its nose section was discovered. German authorities have confirmed the mid-air collision and are treating it as a state-security matter. Police have not publicly confirmed that the object was a second drone or directly linked it to the ground device, though media reports note that airport systems had detected drone activity.

Investigators in Saxony and Lower Saxony are working with federal police. Reports indicate NATO investigators are expected to participate. Authorities have not ruled out sabotage. A search for the drone operator remains ongoing and has so far been unsuccessful.

Leipzig/Halle Airport is a critical logistics node for both commercial cargo (notably DHL) and military-related shipments linked to Ukraine. The presence of multiple Ukrainian Antonov aircraft at the time of the incident has heightened the seriousness with which German and allied security services are treating the event.

Official police statements have confirmed a “security-related incident,” the deployment of a bomb-disposal robot, flight diversions, and an ongoing investigation, while remaining more cautious than media reports on the precise nature of the explosive material.
