Mysuru among 17 cities chosen under PM SVANidhi scheme

Mysuru: Mysuru City has been selected among 17 cities in India to set up a ‘Street Food Hub’ under the PM SVANidhi scheme of Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).

The initiative aims to provide street food vendors with better facilities and create a dedicated destination for the city’s traditional cuisine. MCC Commissioner M.K. Savitha said the selection recognises Mysuru’s food culture, heritage, tourism importance and reputation as a clean city.

The proposed hub is intended to give vendors a safe, hygienic, well-equipped space to run their businesses. Under the initiative, existing street food vending clusters will be developed into organised food centres with modern amenities.

The hub will include food stalls, seating, drinking water, toilets, proper lighting, signboards and solid waste management facilities. It will also provide facilities that meet food safety standards and support digital payments.

A dedicated space

The dedicated space will allow local vendors to sell traditional dishes from Mysuru and other parts of Karnataka. The organised set-up is expected to improve food quality and hygiene, increase vendors’ earnings and give visitors a safe place to experience the region’s native cuisine.

“For a heritage and tourism destination such as Mysuru, the hub is also expected to help promote local food traditions among domestic and international tourists,” MCC Chief M.K. Savitha said. The project aims to combine better working conditions for street vendors with improved public amenities and a more organised food vending environment, she noted.

The initiative is expected to support the Swachh Bharat Mission, sustainable urban development and inclusive economic growth. It is also seen as an opportunity to preserve Mysuru’s culinary heritage, strengthen the livelihoods of street food vendors and add a new attraction to the city’s tourism offerings.

To come up on Sayyaji Rao Road

A site on Sayyaji Rao Road has been selected for the Street Food Hub. Of the two locations shortlisted for the project, the MCC has chosen its land near the old RMC private bus stand, close to Vidyavardhaka educational institutions. Officials inspected the site and prepared graphic designs for the proposed facility.

According to MCC officials, the site is centrally located and close to key landmarks, including K.R. Hospital, Mysore Medical College, private bus stand and APMC sub-market. Its location makes the facility accessible to a large number of people. The proposed hub aims to provide an organised space for street food vendors while also attracting tourists,  particularly during Dasara.

Key elements of ‘Street Food Hub’

  • Durable, non-slip pathways using local stone & traditional motifs.
  • Shaded seating for individuals and groups.
  • Heritage-style lighting for safety at night.
  • Native plants, shade trees and green buffers.
  • Bilingual signboards and maps for easy navigation.
  • Segregated waste bins and regular cleaning.
  • Benches, bollards and bicycle stands reflecting local character.
  • Drinking water stations and misting facilities.
  • Barrier-free access, ramps, tactile paving and wide walkways.
  • CCTV cameras, emergency call points and night-time security.
  • Separate service lanes for deliveries and waste collection.
  • Seating arrangements that keep pedestrian pathways clear.

People have complained that roadside vendors at various locations affect the city’s aesthetics and make it difficult to maintain cleanliness. The proposed project aims to bring these vendors under one roof in a centralised food zone, allowing them to carry out their business at a single location. Steps will be taken to implement the project, and the tender process will begin shortly.
