Mysuru city’s traffic tech gap

by · Star of Mysore

Sir,

It is rather disconcerting to note that Mysuru continues to introduce traffic signal systems rooted in obsolete technology.

Despite being promoted as one of India’s leading smart cities, Mysuru still relies heavily on fixed-time traffic signals that operate on preset intervals, without considering real-time traffic volume or road conditions.

While such systems may have served their purpose in earlier years, they are increasingly ineffective in today’s rapidly evolving urban environment. Their continued use only worsens traffic congestion, causes unnecessary fuel consumption and contributes significantly to rising air pollution.

For a growing city like Mysuru, these inefficiencies affect not only commuters but also the overall quality of urban life.

In contrast, metropolitan cities such as Bengaluru have successfully adopted Vehicle Actuated and Adaptive (VAC) traffic signal systems. These modern systems utilise sensors and surveillance cameras to assess vehicle density and dynamically adjust signal timings, ensuring smoother traffic flow and reduced waiting times.

The benefits of this transition are well-documented. Reports by the Bengaluru Traffic Police indicate that adaptive signals installed at over 100 major junctions have led to a 25-30 percent reduction in congestion and travel time, along with improvements in fuel efficiency and air quality.

Electronics City stands as a compelling example, where intelligent traffic management, rather than expensive infrastructure projects, effectively addressed traffic challenges.

Mysuru would do well to follow this proven model and bridge its traffic technology gap.
