“Dapter” is the Kazakh word for notebook—the companion of all researchers doing fieldwork in Central Asia. This podcast opens that notebook, featuring scholars reflecting on the stories behind their work in Central Asia and discussing what their research reveals about the region’s past, present, and future.

In this episode, Paolo is speaking to Giulia Sciorati, a lecturer in Contemporary Asian Security at King’s College London.

Giulia wrote a book chapter titled Crafting “Attractive” Histories: (Visual) Narrative Contestation Along the Silk Road, where she analyzes and dissects how culture and heritage of the Silk Road are displayed in Kazakhstan.

We chat about what she found out about these visual representations, the tropes she identified, and how the research process took place in Kazakhstan.
