Vera will make its return for two more episodes - as fans try and work out how it will all end.

Brenda Blethyn has confirmed she will be hanging up DCI Vera Stanhope's famous hat at the end of the next series as the ITV drama comes to an end and there will also be a special documentary to mark the final series.

David Leon as DI Joe Ashworth, Jon Morrison as DC Kenny Lockhart, Riley Jones as DC Mark Edwards, Sarah Kameela Impey as pathologist Dr Paula Bennett, and Rhiannon Clements as DC Steph Duncan will all return for the new series.

The first episode will see DCI Stanhope called to the Tyne river, where the body of a young man is found by some anglers. It's soon revealed that the young man is a former inmate, but who killed him? The team must explore a tangled web of a broken relationship, grudges and regret as a well as secret love and fraud to work out what really happened to the young man.

The second and final episode will see Vera return to a fond place in her childhood, the legendary local stones The Dark Wives. A body is found at the foot of the stones - but why was the bright young student attacked and left so far away from home?

Not much more is known about the two final episodes but it has been teased that they will mark Vera's personal journey, with bosses promising a "compelling and emotional farewell" - so how will it all end for Vera?

Many have feared Vera could die to mark the final episodes - but does this prove she could die? Speaking about the show ending, Brenda heaped praise on the cast and crew - as well as the fans.

"Working on Vera has been a joy from beginning to end and I’m sad to be saying Cheerio," she said.

"But I am so proud of our achievements over the last fourteen years. I’ll be forever grateful to the wonderful Ann Cleeves who created Vera, and to Elaine Collins who saw fit to cast me in the role. The Producers, dream cast and crew have been fabulous and I’m going to miss them, but I won’t forget their huge talent, the camaraderie, laughter or kindness we shared nor the friendship of the people of the north east and our fans worldwide. Thank you from the bottom of my heart."
